Suave Communications first came on the Internet scene in 1995, and introduced the Western public to an unusual art form direct from Japan called 'Shibari'. The Web was young, and only a handful of sites featured fetish and bondage. Many surfers were very fascinated by the intricate rope tying technique, exotic looking models, and elaborate sets.

Bondage was still a taboo subject in the West, a fetish well outside the mainstream, and usually associated with rape, torture, kidnapping, and demented behavior. Suave took a bold and open approach, displaying this fetish freely from an Asian perspective on a web site called Rix-Pix, operated by a fictitious webmaster named Rick Suave. Suave found its niche within a niche, and further developed its established contacts in Japan through licensing content with publishers. Within two years, the Internet exploded, and demand for Japanese styled bondage grew. Not satisfied with print images alone, Suave began to introduce weekly online video streams based on scenes depicted in its image galleries.

Demand for video purchase of this strange and different type of bondage from Japan, resulted in Suave securing exclusive licensing and film distribution rights for the Western market in 2000. Since the company's introduction a decade ago, Suave has continued to expand its operation into production and distribution. Now with offices in both Japan and North America, Suave Communications formed the Avista Media Group after the company's sale in 2005 of its flagship Rix-Pix and Jabaku (trans. 'to bind like a snake') web sites, to better dedicate time in producing bondage and other fetish themes originating in Japan and the U.S.
